Bark is the outermost layer of the tree where the major constituents is the dead cells. It is the outermost layer of stems and woody plants. Bark basically refers to the portion of the tree outside the vascular cambium of the plant. The outer bark in older stems includes the dead tissue on the surface of the stems along with parts of the innermost periderm which is present in the plant and all the tissues on the outer side of the periderm of the plant.
