Explanation:

The adsorption of polyelectrolytes on to pure crystals is different from that on to most other surfaces, particularly at high pH, where significant amounts of polymer can be adsorbed. This is likely to be a result of two factors, the first of which is that, although crystals may have an overall negative charge, there will be both positive and negative adsorption sites on the surface. The second factor is that desorption of ions from the surface may reduce the charge produced by the adsorbed polyelectrolyte. Several studies have been reported for polyelectrolytes adsorbed on to BaSO4, which can be prepared reproducibly in a pure form, and, as a substrate, has the advantage of (a) relatively high surface areas (> 10 m2 g−1), (b) low solubility and (c) a chemically stable surface over a wide pH range. It has been shown129 that the adsorption of sodium polyacrylate on to BaSO4 crystals is accompanied by desorption of SO42−, partially reducing the negative charge on the surface conferred by the adsorbed polyelectrolyte. There is, of course, a net increase in negative charge on the particle after adsorption of anionic polyelectrolytes. This has been noticed for sodium carboxy-methylcellulose on BaSO4,164 and lignin sulfonates on CaCO3.165 In a similar way, calcium and phosphate ions were released from hydroxyapatite following adsorption of poly(carboxylic acid)s.166
