The catabolic reactions release energy as a result they are exothermic in nature. Whereas anabolic reactions absorb energy and as a result they are endothermic in nature.

The breakdown of digestion and breakdown of fat in adipose tissue to fatty acids are the two examples of biochemical reactions which are exothermic.

In digestion, large food molecules are broken down with the help of water. The broken down molecules are then sent to the body cells to participate in cellular respiration. The biochemical energy is converted to ATP.
