They  to convert a temperature change into mechanical displacement.

A bimetallic strip generally consists of two strips that are made up of different metals that expand at different rates when heated.

Steel and copper is used more often but in some cases brass and steel can also be used.

These strips are joined to each other by reveting welding or brazing.
