Glucose(6-carbon molecule) changes to pyruvate(3-carbon molecule) + energy in cytoplasm.

Further pyruvate changes itself in 3 different ways (generally it's considered to be in 2 ways).

1. ABSENCE OF OXYGEN (IN YEAST)

Pyruvate in the absence of oxygen changes in ethanol (2-carbon molecule)+ carbon dioxide + water + energy.

2. LACK OF OXYGEN ( IN OUR MUSCLE CELLS)

Pyruvate in the lack of oxygen changes itself in lactic acid(3-carbon molecule)+ water + energy. The formation of lactic acid causes muscle cramps when one undergo sudden muscular activities.

3.PRESENCE OF OXYGEN(IN MITOCHINDRIA)

Pyruvate changes into carbon dioxide +water + energy.

Aerobic respiration releases more energy than Anerobic respiration's energy.
