Adding solute lowers the water potential. When a solution is enclosed by a rigid cell wall, the movement ofwater into the cell will exert pressure on the cell wall. This increase in pressure within the cell will raise thewater potential. There are two components to water potential: solute concentration and pressure.

The two factors that affect the water potential are -
(i) Solute Potential (Ψ) :- It is defined as the amount by which the water potential is reduced as a result of the presence of solute. The more the solute molecules, the lower is the solute potential.
(ii) Hydrostatic pressure or pressure potential (Ψ) :- It is the pressure that develops in an osmotic system due to osmotic entry or exit of water from it. The pressure developed in the plant cell due to entry of water is called as Turgor pressure.
