The refractive index of a medium depends on the wavelength of the light. If the wavelength of light is less the refractive index will be high. Secondly it depends on the density of the substance. The intermolecular force between the molecules of the substance will affect the refractive index. The index is also influenced by the permeability of the material.

The refractive index of a medium depends upon the speed of light. The higher the speed, the smaller the refractive index
It also depends upon the temperature. The higher the temperature, the higher will be speed of light and lower will be the refractive index.
