The Harappan civilization was located in the Indus River valley. Its two large cities, Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, were located in present-day Pakistan's Punjab and Sindh provinces, respectively. Its extent reached as far south as the Gulf of Khambhat and as far east as the Yamuna River.

Two Indians who were associated with the excavation of the sites connected with the Harappan civilization are archaeologists Daya Ram Sahani and R.D Banerjee.

In 1921, the archaeologist Daya Ram Sahni carried out the first excavation at Harappa, and between 1922 and 1927, R.D Banarjee carried out excavations at Mohenjo-Daro.

Kot Diji:

  • In 1955, Kot Diji was excavated by F.A. Khan.
  • It is situated near Mohenjo-Daro in Sind district in Pakistan.
  • This site was also divided into two parts the Citadel area on high ground and the lower town or the outer area.
  • Houses were made with mud and bricks.
  • Kot Diji was famous for making beautiful pottery with decorative designs.

Dholavira:

  • The city of Dholavira lies on the Khadir Island of Kutch in Gujarat.
  • They called it Kotala. It had fresh water and fertile land.
  • Dholavira was divided into three parts- the acropolis, a middle town, and a lower town.
  • There was also a large public area for public ceremonies.
  • Ten large letters of the Harappan script that were carved out of white stone have been found here.
