Bombay and Calcutta .

The newly developed towns of Bombay, Calcutta, Delhi and Madras had a taste of essentially European flavours with a sprinkling of Indian aroma. Thus the new towns had certain common features. • In addition to major urban design schemes, there came up many civil lines and the cantonments. The cantonments were British military settlements laid out wherever the British were placed in sizeable numbers. They served as barracks for the British officers. These settlements also had provisions to house the civilian population such as the families of the British officials, servant's quarters, schools, shops, parks and churches. They had excellent civic amenities like drainage, electricity and piped water.

The new cities had broad roads and large and imposing buildings like the government offices, public libraries, parks, markets and clock towers, big bungalows and gardens. • The new towns had clear demarcation of the indigenous population from Europeans by creating separate settlements. The main aim was to physically and socially separate the Europeans from the indigenous populace. This was being done to enforce sanitary and developmental guidelines on the old towns.
