It is observed that regions
having fertile soil and water
availability has always been the
most preferable site for the
settlement of earlier civilization
like Mesopotamia or Indus valley
civilisation. Even today in India,
Indo Gangetic plain has the most
fertile land and hence highly
populated (Bihar, West
Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Prade
whereas desert area (Rajasthan)
and mountainous area (Jammu &
Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Himac
comparatively less populated.

These soils are deficient in nitrogen (N), phosphorus and organic matter. Generally, alluvial soils range from near neutral to slightly alkaline in reaction. A wide variety of crops is grown in these soils.

If the soil is fertile, then the population starts to settle there as they want fertile soil for cultivation. On the other hand, if the soil is infertile one, then less or no cultivation is possible there. So the fertility of soil affects the distribution of the population.
