Carbon has two unique properties that help that element to form large number of compounds :-
• Catenation --> Carbon forms covalent bonds with any other atom of carbon or any other element.
• Tetravalency --> Since carbon has the valency of 4, it shares it's electrons with any other elements.

These two properties play a major role in the vast number of compounds formed by carbon.

Catenation - it is the process by which carbon forms compounds with other carbon atoms or oatoms of different elements by a covalent bond.
Tetravalency- carbon is tetravalent, i.e. It has 4 electrons in its outermost shell. Carbon can neither lose 4 electors nor gain 4 electrons to attain a noble gas configuration. So carbon forms covalent bonds. Dur to the small size of a carbon atom, the cabon to carbon bond is very strong
