adit22: u can't define which situation he is referring to actually...its a controversial issue...Both the tenses are correct..

adit22: I know that too...but in english sometimes sentences don't sound natural...but according to the rule book it's ok..
Anonymous: He is referring to his conversation to the person in the past, he said that he was, it could be that the person at present isn't well
