Modern Nationalism is a relatively new phenomena. Historically, the world was largely lived in a feudal society, under cultural and societal hierarchies.

The world consisted of city states and small empire, which were usually subjects to a larger empire.

In those times, nationalism usually referred to around a race, caste or creed for a people. Races of people could have been subjects of a larger empire e.g. the Hebrews as slaves to the Egyptians or Africans living under the Italian Empire.

After the Industrial Revolution and the improvement in education and science, things started to change as more and more people became aware of their race and wanted to fight for their political rights.

No where was this more prominent then in Eastern European countries and colonies of European powers such as Britain and France.

Nationalism came with the rise in Republics and we gradually saw a move towards even small races started fighting wars for their 'rights'

However, today there are many countries which are not 'nations' per se, e.g. Pakistan is a country made for Muslims and has various nations, creeds and ethnicities in it.
