Natural classification also known as Cladistic classification, under which organisms are classified based upon complete or gross morphological characters.

All the characters are not equal in this types of classification and so only maximum characters are taken as the basis of classification.

Reproductive or Sexual characters are given more significance.

There are two types of natural classification :-

1. Natural non-phylogenetic classification that is based upon the gross morphological characters.

2. Natural phylogenetic classification that is based upon both the morphological characters and phylogeny.

Natural classification for flowering plants was given by George Betham and Joseph Dalton Hooker.

Natural systems of classification take into consideration

  1. Morphological and anatomical characters.
  2. Cytological and embryological characters.
  3. Physiological and reproductive characters.
