The great plains where the Ganga flows are classified into four divisions:
1. The Bhabar belt - It is adjacent to the foothills of the Himalayas and consists of boulders and pebbles.
2. The Terai belt - The region is excessively moist and thickly forested.
3. The Bangar belt - It has a low upland covered by laterite deposits.
4. The Khadir belt - It lies in lowland areas.
