The great plains where the Ganga flows are classified into four divisions:

1. The Bhabar belt - It is adjacent to the foothills of the Himalayas and consists of boulders and pebbles.

2. The Terai belt - The region is excessively moist and thickly forested.

3. The Bangar belt - It has a low upland covered by laterite deposits.

4. The Khadir belt - It lies in lowland areas.
