His fondness for being with students is no secret and he has absolutely no doubts about
displaying his affection for them. This is despite the fact that he occupies the highest office in the
country. For down-to-earth APJ Abdul Kalam, being President didn't stand between him and his
love for school children.
Any fear the children might feel dissolves quickly when they see how accessible he is.
Bowled over by the easy ways of the then president and his impromptu mingling at interactive
sessions, the children all over the country had accorded him an iconic status. It was as if, away
from the world of glamour and glitter, they had found a man of substance, a role model in
Kalam-somebody they could look up to and symbolise.​
