This is because the formula of area of triangle is 1/2 × Base × Heigt.

If the base of both the triangles are common, suppose 'x',  their base would be 'x'.

If they lie between the same parallels, then, their height would be equal, suppose 'y', their height would be 'y'.

∴  Area of triangle ABC = 1/2 × x × y

   Area of triangle DEF = 1/2 × x × y

Since area triangles ABC and DEF are equal to the same equations, their areas are equal.
