Martial Law was imposed in Poland by the head of state General Jaruzelski from December 13, 1981 to July 22, 1983. According to the government, the causes behind the imposition of martial law were
1. The increased threat of violence and public unrest due to the activities of the pro democracy Solidarity movement. Poland was at that time a communist dictatorship and any form of opposition to the government was illegal. Solidarity was, however, leading a non-violent opposition to the government with the aim of establishing democracy in Poland. Jaruzelski feared that unless Solidarity was suppressed, the communist government in Poland would collapse. To prevent that scenario, he imposed martial law.
2. Jaruzelski also wanted to control the media and educational institutions. He feared that these institutions were not supporting his government. With martial law, he could impose censorship on the media and ensure that educational institutions did not oppose the government.
3. Jaruzelski also wanted to increase economic productivity in Poland to help the faltering Polish economy. By imposing martial law, he could impose a six-day work week on key sectors of the economy like power stations, coal mines, sea ports, train stations etc. These sectors were placed under military management which, he hoped, would help increase productivity and output.
