Why can we not measure the speed of a butterfly?

we can measure speed of butterflies ...there are certain highspeed camera type intruments for measurement of speed of things in irregular motion....i saw on t.v a wildlife photographer did it...avearge speed is calculated by the displacement covered by it...and not the distance....and new technologies are to make 3d images of the path of butterfly which is afterwards calculated...

We cannot measure the total distance covered by the butterfly.This is because the butterfly does not move in a straight line but it flits in random motion.Since we do not know the total distance travelled by it,and hence we have no way to find its speed.
