Mahatma Gandhi gave more emphasis on skill development rather than an ability to read and write. He felt that a person should learn the necessary skills so that he could earn a livelihood. Hence, he wanted children to be taught handicrafts.

Gandhiji thought that children/people needed to work with their hands.he also believed that education ought to develop a persons mind and soul.he thought that by learning handicrafts children could understand how different things operated and thus,it would develop their mind as well as their understanding capacity.
