Answer to your question:
k {x}^{2}  - 3x - 1 = 0
put x=1/2

k {( \frac{1}{2}) }^{2}  - 3( \frac{1}{2} ) - 1 = 0
 \frac{k}{4}  -  \frac{3}{2}  - 1 = 0
multiply whole equation by 4,
k - 6 - 4 = 0
k - 10 = 0
k = 10
