The Jury for the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding chaired by Hon'ble Vice President of India, Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat has decided to confer the Award for the year 2005 on Prof. Wangari M. Maathai of Kenya. Prof. Wangari M. Maathai, who became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, is internationally recognized for her persistent struggle for democracy, human rights and environmental conservation.

The Jury has also decided to confer the Jawaharlal Nehru award for International Understanding for the year 2006 on President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, H.E. Mr. Luiz Nacio Lula da Silva. Besides being a leading world leader, President Lula has contributed immensely towards the strengthening of bilateral relations between India and Brazil.
