MUMBAI: There was a major traffic jam for nearly six hours on the old Mumbai-Pune highway and the Khopoli road connecting to the Expressway on Friday, as work commenced at the spot where the fatal landslide had earlier occurred at the Aadoshi tunnel.
"As the work had begun on Friday afternoon to remove loose rocks from the hillside adjoining the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the traffic had to be diverted to the old Mumbai-Pune highway via the Khopoli exit. Hence, due to the added rush, there was traffic jam on the old highway till Friday evening," said a state highway patrol official from Raigad district.
On Wednesday, the state PWD minister Eknath Shinde had also inspected the landslide site at the Aadoshi tunnel on the Expressway and ordered the officials to strengthen the netting along this important road route to ensure that such accidents can be prevented, especially in the monsoon time.
Reportedly, for the next 10 days, the Expressway will be closed daily from 10 am to 5 pm and the traffic will continue to be diverted to the old highway vial the Khopoli exit.
