NFWP or the National Food for Work Programme was launched by the then Minister of Rural Development, GOI on 14th November, 2004 in 150 selected backward districts of the country. It was started in order to create a supplementary add-on feature in wage generation. It was thus launched with an aim to provide food in lieu of work to the poorest of poor people of the selected districts. It was a centrally-sponsored scheme aimed at rural development.
