NHERC stands for National Higher Education Regulatory Council.

• Recently the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has been introduced with an aim to transform higher education in India.
• A single body will be constituted for higher education( excluding legal and medical)- Higher Education Commission of India( HECI).

• The HECI will have the following branches-

1. National Higher EducationRegulatory Council (NHERC) - mainly for regulation
2. National Accreditation Council(NAC)- for accreditation of various institutions
3. Higher Education Grants Council (HEGC)- for funding purposes
4. General Education Council(GEC)- for learning outcomes.
