Answer

let x be the number of chickens and y be the number of dogs.

We are given for heads that

x + y = 48

for legs of chicken we will multiply x with 2 because a chicken has 2 legs.

= 2x

for legs of dog we will multiply y with 4 because a dog has 4 legs.

= 4y

2x + 4y = 134

now,

x + y = 48

x = 48 - y

by substitution method,

2x + 4y = 138

2(48-y)+ 4y = 134

96 - 2y + 4y = 134

we will get,

2y = 38

y = 19

Nikhil has 19 dogs

For chickens

x + y = 48

x + 19 = 48

x = 29

Nikhil has 29 chickens

Let the number of chickens be x and let the number of dogs be y

So, for heads the equation will be :

x + y = 48

Now, to find y value :

x + y = 48

y = 48 - x

To find number legs of chicken we need to multiply x with 2 (as chicken has 2 legs) = 2x

To find the number of legs dogs have we need to multiply y with 4 (as dogs have 4 legs) = 4y

2x + 4y = 134

2x + 4 (48 - x) = 134

2x + 192 - 4x = 134

-2x = 134 - 192

-2x = -58

x = -58 ÷ -2

x = 29

Therefore, Nikhil has 29 chickens.

For dogs :

x + y = 48

29 + y = 48

y = 48 - 29

y = 19

Therefore, Nikhil has 19 dogs.
