The NITI Aayog is the erstwhile Planning Commission, only the name has been changed by the present government of India.
It has also been known as the National Institution for Transforming India.
It is a think tank for policy affairs of the Government of India.
It set out to improve cooperative federalism through the active involvement of various State Governments in the policy-making process.
It says it utilises a bottom-up approach to reach its Sustainable Development Goals.
Its major initiatives include a "7-year vision, strategy and action plan" and "15 year road map" for developing the country, just like the earlier Planning Commission used to work.
However, like all other major commissions under the present government, it has also faced obstacles which are proving to be quite substantial for it.
