Nitrification is the biological oxidation of ammonia or ammonium to nitrite followed by the oxidation of the nitrite to nitrate.

The formation of nitrites by the oxidation of ammonium ion which is followed by the conversion of nitrites to nitrates is called nitrification.The first step of this process involves the conversion of ammonium ion to nitrites which is carried out by bacteria of Genera Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira and Nitrosococcus. The second steps involves the conversion of nitrite to nitrate which is carried out by the bacteria of the genera Nitrospira, Nitobacter,Nitrococcus
