Nutrients are environmental substances used for energy, growth, and bodily functions by organisms. Depending on the nutrient, these substances are needed in small amounts or larger amounts. Those that are needed in large amounts are called macronutrients.

Short notes on macro-nutrients:

Macro-nutrients are a type of dietary necessities that are required in quite large amounts by the body. Examples of macro-nutrients are calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

For the body to function properly, it needs a balanced diet of carbohydrates, protein, and fat and also vitamins and minerals. Vitamins are elements that are needed by the body in small amounts. Apart from these, there are certain elements that are needed in large amounts and these are called macro-nutrients.

Examples are – calcium, magnesium, potassium, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and others. Without the presence of these nutrients, the body would suffer from a host of ailments like – Osteo-malacia, weakness, confusion and dizziness and others.
