Equilibrium is a stage when rate of forward and backward reaction becomes equal. At this stage, the rate at which the amount of reactant converted to product is equal to rate of conversion of product to reactant. For example as shown below in the figure, the rate of formation of HI becomes equal to rate of dissociation of HI. At this stage the two curves become parallel to each other which overlap each other.
