Nitrogen Fixation
Nitrogen fixation is the process of coversion of atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms like Nitrates,Nitrites and Ammonia
- This reaction is carried out by an enzyme called Nitrogenase
- Generally, nitrogen fixation is done by plants for the synthesis of essential proteins and nutrients
- These proteins are of survival importance to plants
Some of these proteins are carrier proteins which help in the processes of Active Transport, Photosynthesis, Respiration etc
- Animals as we know are heterotrophs, thus deriving their nutrition from plants. Indirectly, nitrogen fixation helps in meeting their energy needs and metabolic activities
- Also, helps in maintaining the homeostasis of the ecosystem on a whole
