Nitrogen Fixation

Nitrogen fixation is the process of coversion of atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms like Nitrates,Nitrites and Ammonia

  • This reaction is carried out by an enzyme called Nitrogenase

  • Generally, nitrogen fixation is done by plants for the synthesis of essential proteins and nutrients

  • These proteins are of survival importance to plants

Some of these proteins are carrier proteins which help in the processes of Active Transport, Photosynthesis, Respiration etc

  • Animals as we know are heterotrophs, thus deriving their nutrition from plants. Indirectly, nitrogen fixation helps in meeting their energy needs and metabolic activities

  • Also, helps in maintaining the homeostasis of the ecosystem on a whole
