No chemical reaction takes place when granules of a solid a or mixed with the Powder of another solid be however when the mixture is heated a reaction takes place between its components one of the products e C a metal and metals in the molten state while the other product D floats over it was observed that the reaction is highly and exothermic
Answers
solid B is aluminium powder, Al
solid C is iron
Initially the heating of the reactants is must, as the reactants (solid) need to be melted. This reaction is used for joining railway tracks and machine parts. this type of reaction is also called as thermite reaction
the reaction is as follows
2Al (s) + Fe₂O₃ (s) with heat⇒ Al₂O₃ (s) + 2Fe (l) + heat

no reaction takes place when granules of solid A are mixed with a powder B. however when the mixture is heated, a reaction starts with theevolution of much heat. Product C of the reaction settles down as a liquid metal and solid product D keeps on floating over C.
a) based on the above information make assumptions of A and B and corresponding deductions of C and D and write a balanced chemical equation for the above reaction.
b) state the amount of heat evolved or absorbed in the above reaction.

Part-A
Solid A is assumed to be Aluminium (Al) and solid B to be Manganese dioxide.
When the mixture of MnO2 and Al is heated, manganese (Mn) is produced in molten state and aluminium oxide (Al2O3) floats over it. Mn is produced in the molten state as a lot of heat energy is released in the process. Therefore, "C" is Mn and "D" is Al2O3.
Reaction Involved-
MnO2 + Al -------> Al2O3 + Mn
Part-B
The types of reaction under which the above reaction is classified are—
1. Redox reaction
2. Displacement reaction
