Answer:

X = 110/3

Y = 70/3

Step-by-step explanation:

Cumulative frequencies of the above table are as follow

Class   Freq.  Cumulative Freq.

0 -10  10 10

10 – 20  20 30

20 – 30  x 30 + x

30 – 40  40 70 + x

40 – 50  y 70 + x + y

50 – 60  25 95 + x + y

60 – 70  15 110 + x + y

From the above table, it is given that total frequencies (N) = 170

110 + x + y = 170

X + y = 60 --------------------------------------------E1

Median = 35.

Hence the median class is 20 – 30

So Lower limit of median class (L) = 20

Cumulative frequency of class preceding the median freq. = cf = 30

Frequency of median class = f = x

Class size = h = 10

Median is given by

Median = L + (N/2 - cf)h/f

35 = 20 + (85 - 30)10/x

15 = (550/x)

X = 550/15 = 110/3

X + y = 60

Y = 60 – 110/3 = 70/3

The x and y values are real numbers not integers, so please check question once.
