The number of spectral lines obtained when electrons provided with a photon of energy 11ev is :

(1) 1

This can be calculated as follows:

  • In case of Hydrogen atom, E = 13.6 ev for n = 1
  • Now, for n = 2,

       E = 13.6 [ 1/(n₁²) - 1/(n₂²)]

          = 13.6 [ 1/1 - 1/4]

          = 10.2 ev

  • Therefore, for the given energy 11ev, it falls into the range of [ 13.6, 10.2 ]
  • Thus, the number of the spectral line is 1.

Answer:

An electron can either accept the entire photon or not accept it at all.

Since the difference is 10.2ev between the 1st two shells and 12.09 between 1st and 3rd shell hence it cannot accept a photon of energy 11ev

Hence no spectral lines are observed.
