Answer:

Explanation of the parts of a Hydra and their function:

  • Tubular Body- secured by simple adhesive foot called basal disc
  • basal disc- gland cells secrete sticky fluid which allow adhesive properties:
  • mouth- at the end of the body surrounded by 1-12 thin mobile tentacles
  • cnida (tentacle)- have highly specialized stinging cells called cnidocytes
  • when alarmed or attacked, tentacles retract into small buds and body column itself can be retracted to a small sphere
  • cnidocyte- have specialized structures called nematocysts:  (miniature light builds with a coiled thread inside).
  • cnidocil- short trigger hair at outer narrow edge of the cnidocyte. Upon contact with prey, contents of nematocysts are discharged firing a dart-like thread containing neurotoxins.
  • neurotoxins- paralyze the pray
  • body layers- separated by mesoglea, a gel-like substance
  • epidermis- outer layer
  • gastrodermis- inner layer
  • — made up of Hydramacin, a bactericide which protect outer layer against infection
  • epidermis- respiration and excretion occur by diffusion through this
  • — hunt: bend over and attach themselves with their mouth and tentacles, then release the foot which provides the usual attachment (looping)
  • — can move 100 mm in a day
  • — move by amoeboid motion of their bases or by detaching from the substrate and floating away in the current

Amoebas eat algae, bacteria, plant cells, and microscopic protozoa and metazoa – some amoebas are parasites. They eat by surrounding tiny particles of food with pseudopods, forming a bubble-like food vacuole. The food vacuole digests the food.An amoeba functions as a part of the food web as a consumer and scavenger. This organism feeds on dead matter as well as other small organisms such as algae and protozoans. The amoeba in turn provides food for water fleas and mussels.

Planaria eat living or dead small animals that they suck up with their muscular mouths. Food passes from the mouth through the pharynx into the intestines where it is digested by the cells lining the intestines. Then its nutrients diffuse to the rest of the planaria. They have high power of regeneration.
