No one is born criminal, but the circumstances makes them so. The convict had no other choice than to steal food for his wife, Jeanette. For stealing he was caught. Here, his situation was of hunger, therefore he had to steal. That is why he became a thief.

"NO ONE IS BORN CRIMINAL"

The circumstances made the convict a criminal.He was sent to prison only for stealing a loaf of bread that too not for him but for his ill , bed ridden wife.
He was sent to 10 yrs of imprisonment to jail.The people in the jail included from a pocket picker to a murderer.Living with these type of people in the jail made him  a  wild beast.He himself agrees with that.
