in this sentence . strength refers to power . resisted refers to avoid something and slaught refers to kill .
now this sentence basically says that a ship which had twice the strength could not resist ( avoid ) the slaught ( killing ).
i may or may not be wrong , but according to me , this line says that when something is supposed to happen , it will happen . nothing that has a lot of power would be able to avoid it or stop it .
