Question:

  • Four identical spheres each of Radius 10 cm and mass 1 kg are placed in a horizontal surface touching one another so that tgeir centres are located at the corner of the square of side 20 cm. What is the distance of their csntre of mass from centre of either sphere?

Answer:

\large\bold\red{(d)none\:of\:these}

Explanation:

Given,

4 identical spheres of Radius 10 cm are kept touching each other on corners of a square of side 20 cm .

Note:- Refer to attachment for Diagram.

Clearly,

We know that,

Centre of mass will lie on the mid point of diagonal of the square.

Now,

By pythagoras theorem,

The length of diagonal is given by,

 = > d = \sqrt{ {(20)}^{2} + {(20)}^{2} } \\ \\ = > d = \sqrt{2 \times {(20)}^{2} } \\ \\ = > d = 20 \sqrt{2} \: cm

Clearly,

The diagonal touches the centres of two spheres.

Therefore,

It's mid point will be at a distance of \frac{20\sqrt{2}}{2}\:cm .

Therefore,

Centre of mass lies at a distance of \bold{10\sqrt{2}\; cm} from either sphere.

Hence,

Option (d) is correct.
