In September 1920, at the Calcutta session of Congress, Gandhiji launched the non- violent, Non- Cooperation movement, urging Indians not to cooperate with the British and defined swaraj as the ultimate aim. This movement has following aims:

To redress the wrongs done to Punjab and to attain swaraj for the people of India by all legitimate and peaceful means.

In this movement, peoples were asked to boycott the foreign goods and the huge bonfires will lit to burn that foreign goods and also Gandhiji advocated the spinning and wearing of khadi and boycotting British made clothes. People refused to cast their vote for elections to elect representatives to the legislature, lawyers boycotted courts, strikes and hartals took place all over the country and also Indians refused to serve in the army and in government jobs.

The movement gained great success were the British government continued with repressive measurs and arrested almost 30,000 people but however, the movement failed to remain non-violent because of the chauri chaura incident which took place on February 5, 1922, which forced Gandhiji to call off the non cooperation movement.
