Non-metals do not evolve hydrogen gas when react with water, steam or dilute acids. Why?

This is due to the fact that Non-Metals are electronegative elements.

Explanation:

In order to evolve Hydrogen gas when it react with water , steam or dilute acids it will have to give electron go reduce hydrogen ions of water into Hydrogen gas. But Non-Metals itself are the acceptor of electrons and that is why they can't give electron to hydrogen ions of water ,steam or dilute acid to reduce it to form Hydrogen gas.
