Non metals do not evolve hydrogen gas when react with water or steam. Why?

The heat evolved is not sufficient forhydrogen to catch fire. Calcium start floating because the bubbles ofhydrogen gas formed stick toh surface of metal. Magnesium does react with cold water. It react with hot water to form magnesium hydroxide andhydrogen .
