Answer:

There are three different definitions of acids and bases. The first was proposed by Arrhenius over a hundred years ago which state that an acid is an ionic compound that releases H+ in water and a base is an ionic compound that releases OH- in water. The next definition was proposed by Bronsted and Lowry and says an acid is an H+ donor and a base is an H+ acceptor. This allowed for more compounds to be called basses, allowed for equilibrium reactions and removed the requirement for aqueous solutions. The third and most general definition was proposed by Lewis and states that acids are electron pair acceptors and bases are electron pair donors. This allows even more compounds to be classified as acids and bases. The most commonly used definition is the Bronsted Lowery definition.
