Notes for Ch- SIMPLE EQUATIONS



EQUATION – An equation is a condition on a variable. It is a statement of equality of two algebraic expressions including variables. (L.H.S. = R.H.S.

VARIABLE – It is an unknown numerical quantity denoted by lower case alphabets, such as

, , , … . , , , .


SOLUTION OF AN EQUATION – It is the value of the variable for which the equation is satisfied, i.e. L.H.S. = R.H.S.


EXPRESSION – It is formed by performing operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. For example:

✓ + 5 ✓ − 3

✓ 5 × ✓

CONSTANT– A numerical value whose quantity is fixed and independent of variable. It is always in addition or subtraction.


COEFFICIENT– It is a multiplicative factor with the variable.


The equation remains the same when the expressions on L.H.S. and R.H.S. are interchanged.
