it can be simply understand by remembering this keyword ,prefix+ root word +suffix. prefix is made of side chains and alkyl group,root word is no of carbon atom and suffix is1) bond suffix I.e ene,ane ,yne and2) functional groups suffix which can learn from your book and give preference to chain which give less position to bond and functional groups and of greater no of carbon atom.
