When magnesium carbonate reacts with sulphuric acid that has been diluted, it goes through neutralisation reaction which results in magnesium sulphate being produced along with water and carbon dioxide.

Effervescence will also take place in a brisk manner due to the liberation of the gas carbon dioxide. Following is the reaction formula:

MgCO3 + H2SO4   ->    MgSO4 + H2O + CO2
