Several English and French authors wrote novels, during the eighteenth century. Novels were written in easy to read language and were not very voluminous, making them popular amongst the educated people of England and France.

English authors like Jonathan Swift, Daniel Defoe, Oliver Goldsmith, Tobias Smollet, William Beckford, Henry Fielding and several others had their own style of writing, which made them famous. In France, authors like Voltaire, Baron de Montesquieu, Marques de Sade, Jean Jacques Rousseau and many others wrote prolifically.

As a result, the number of publishing houses grew in England and France to meet the demand for novels.

The popularity of the various literary novels in Europe is due to the following reasons-

a) Novels introduced the mass to a world of imagination full of plots, subplots, twists, different characters, and even some real-life stories.

b) Reading the novels became a hobby for the middle-class economic class.

c) After the industrial revolution, printing press was invented which made it possible to print hundreds of copies of the novels.
