Whims are sudden decisions to do something, on impulse, with no particular reason and fancies are in the same vein, a sudden liking expressed for something or someone. No particular explanation or reason why this liking has been expressed. Therefore “Whims and fancies” refers to these sudden, impulsive even irrational actions; chopping and changing with no real reason. Children sometimes make their parents dance on to their whims and fancies out of peer pressure.
