good afternoon______________✌️✌️✌️✌️
The neuromuscular junction refers to the connection, more precise, the synapse between a presynaptic axon terminal and a postsynaptic skeletal muscle membrane. The picture below illustrates this clearly:
1. The neuromuscular junction is the site where the neurotransmitter is released into the synaptic cleft (see picture b) as a result of the propagating action potential from the axon.
2. The neurotransmitter (acetylcholine, epinephrine, norepinephrine etc.) then binds to the postsynaptic membrane
3. This makes the membrane depolarize and causes an action potential to be propagated along the membrane (sarcolemma)
4. In the end, this will cause the muscle to contract.
