Lt. Colonel James Thomas Norgate translated the memories of SitaRam Pande into English

EXPLANATION:

  • One of the many Indian soldiers who helped the British conquer India and hold it afterwards, was Sita Ram Pande. In 1812 he entered the Bengal Army Infantry Regiment and was a soldier until, after forty-eight years of service in 1860, he was discharged.
  • He took part in the Gurkhas, Mahrattas and Pindaris campaigns, he was active in the Bharatpoore floods, and he engaged in the violent First Afghan War during the interim period. During the Mutiny, he stayed true to his salt. He rose from Sepoy to Subedar, but only reached the latter position when he was too old to fulfill his functions.
  • He claims to have been injured seven times, taken once in prison and earned six medals. He went on to write the story of his encounters in favor of the always incomprehensible British at the end of this long and interesting career at the request of his last Commanding Officer.
