- Subsidiary Alliance was the basically a treaty between the British East India company and the Indian princely states, by virtue of which the Indian kingdoms lost their sovereignty to the English. It also was a major process that led to the building of the British Empire in India.
- Terms of Subsidiary Alliance:
An Indian ruler entering into a subsidiary alliance with the British would accept British forces within his territory and to pay for their maintenance. If the rulers failed to make the payments that were required by the alliance, part of their territory would be taken away as punishment.
